Advertising For Women
PERFECTION -THE PRESSURE IS ON
In today’s society looking gorgeous is becoming the
most valuable qualities that a person is “ought to” strive for. Your eyebrows should be “on fleek” and the pressure
to wear designer clothes invades in full force, not to mention if you want to
be considered up-to-date on social media the photos of yourself (or anything
for that matter) better be Instagram-worthy.
Indeed, not every single one of you are followers, in fact, there are millions
that scroll on without reading the latest “beauty-trends”. But, then again, there are those of us that
do give a dime, or two (or three, or four, or 100000) about the latest fashion
trends, and it is very common that we get sucked in by this great giant that
starts to slowly have a hold on us, and, very often, chip away at our body image
if we are not well-grounded in our character.
We become “addicted” to Allure,
Vogue, Sephora, and we follow, we like, we love, and pin our ideal images
of beauty that is forced in our minds
by big brands, and corporations that target us unapologetically. Many of you might have noticed, that in recent
years advertising has taken on a lot more sophisticated approach for targeting
potential customers, which is by utilizing social media gurus to sell their
products which often end up selling a
lifestyle instead of a single product.
What do I mean by this? From
makeup brands to food brands everything is suggested and advertised in these vlogs, and it is needless to say that followers
are greatly influenced by these advertising techniques.

Women's Bodies In Advertising
“Women’s bodies are still used to sell everything from shampoo to chain saws, and are often dismembered into parts—breasts, legs, buttocks” – Jean Kilbourne

• 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful
• 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful, but do not see their own beauty
• More than half of women globally (54%) agree that when it comes to how they look, they are their own worst beauty critic.

What is Beautiful?

There are many women out there that were brave enough to speak up about how media affected them, how expectations distorted their ideals of beauty, and what they did to counteract these effects. One of these women happens to be one of my favorite singer of all time: Alicia Keys. Alicia Keys is knows for her original, down-to-earth personality that captures the hearts of many, but what is more amazing about her? She uses her fame and voice to send positive empowering messages to women. She decided recently that she won't use make-up for a while, simply because she doesn't want to. Is she against make-up? No, not at all, but rather, wants to be free of expectations and "covering up" herself even when it does not feel right.
Here's two YouTube video of Alicia talking about her new view on not wearing makeup.
The Body Project
"Before World War I, girls rarely mentioned their bodies in terms of strategies for self-improvement or struggles for personal identity. Becoming a better person meant paying less attention to the self, giving more assistance to others, and putting more effort into instructive reading or lessons at school." - Joan Jacobs Brumberg (The Body Project)

I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn how some socially constructed ideas (how women should act or what they should follow in society) have made their way into popular culture. My favorite part of this book is in the beginning where Brumberg compares girls from the Victorian era to girls today. This section is a truly eye-opening one as she provides some examples of what girls in that time used to write down in their journals, compared to today's girls. It is extremely interesting how the focus from our inner qualities, personalities, has shifted completely to our outside appearances throughout the years. Besides comparing how women's attitudes, and self-image have changed, this book also reveals many interesting facts about how misconceptions of women's anatomy and physiology shaped some practices and ideas that have affected the lives of women in the Victorian era.

Hey Greta,
How do you feel about the photoshopping in magazines to emphasize "the body type" or the super models in Victoria's Secret that correlate a specific body type to "sexy"? What's the ethos, pathos, and logos being expressed ? How does these suggestions influence your decisions on self-image and the way you place yourself in societies hierarchy? Do these suggestions influence your quality of life ? And if they do how might these effects be countered or even negated ?
I hope these questions help in your goal :)
Hi Eric,
Photoshopping is a great tool but magazines and the media uses it in an extreme way where everything on a picture is fake and unrealistic. Victoria’s secret is a great example how it uses emotional persuasion to convince the costumer that if they buy their product they will be sexy just like the models, which is the brand’s major advertising technique. These all affect our perception of self because they raise a beaty standard that we feel like we need to compare ourselves to. Im gona make a post on how to counteract these effects very soon.
Thanks a lot for your input!

Dear Greta,
I hate this body-obsessed world. This type of world associates wealth and intelligence with physical appearances. I don't have the "perfect body" due to medical issues and i get treated negatively. I feel like i am less respected at my job from management and co-workers because of my body weight. I believe other students in school avoid me because they don't want to be associated with me.
This also affects my romantic relationships. Im always worried that i dont look good enough. That it's just a matter of time before the person im with finds someone better.
Of course, I could be wrong. It might not be because of my weight and my body image but it's terrible that in this body-obsessed world there is this fear. Yes, everyone wants to be healthy but for some it's a struggle and sometimes that struggle is out of their hands. This causes depression, eating disorders, poor self-esteem, and so much more.
In the end, i struggle emotionally and physically with my body image but i try to remember to love myself and to keep going. One day at a time. :)
Thank you so much for sharing it's greatly valued! :)
It's truly a shame how our contemporary culture has failed to advance in this aspect even though we've made huge advancements so many other areas.... we pretty much allow media to tell us what we're supposed to consider beautiful.... there no such a thing as perfect, never was and never will... these media generated fake beauty standards are created to provoke certain feelings, and reactions from us so we go and act on them(buy the miracle products). Love yourself and love yourself for who you are!!
Good stuff
